Verein zur Bewahrung des jüdischen Kulturerbes Lackenbachs

Welcome to the Association for the Preservation of the Jewish Cultural Heritage of Lackenbach

For centuries, Lackenbach was a vibrant Jewish community shaped by religious life, scholarship, trade, and a unique coexistence between Jews and Christians.

The Shoah extinguished this life — yet the traces, stories, and memories remain.

Our association is dedicated to:

  • documenting and researching the history of the Jewish community of Lackenbach

  • protecting and preserving the historic Jewish cemetery, the mikveh, and surviving buildings once owned by Jewish residents, as well as maintaining other sites of remembrance

  • preserving, transcribing, and making accessible the inscriptions on gravestones

  • connecting descendants of Jewish families from Lackenbach around the world

  • establishing the Jewish Information Center Lackenbach

  • offering workshops, educational programs, and projects for schools

  • strengthening awareness of Jewish history in Burgenland

  • learning from history in order to preserve and strengthen democratic structures and to counter the erosion of democracy

We invite you to join us in preserving this unique cultural heritage.

About the Association

The Association for the Preservation of the Jewish Cultural Heritage of Lackenbach was founded to safeguard the cultural, religious, and historical heritage of one of the most important Jewish communities in Burgenland and to make it accessible to the public while fostering a culture of remembrance.

For us, remembrance is not only about looking back — it is also a responsibility for the future.

Our activities include:

Research

Academic research and scholarly publications.

Preservation

Safeguarding Hebrew inscriptions and symbols (gravestones, documents, ritual objects).

Cooperation

Working with the Austrian Jewish Museum in Eisenstadt, the Federal Monuments Office, universities, and local institutions.

Collection

Gathering testimonies of witnesses and family histories.

Promotion

Encouraging intercultural and interreligious dialogue.

Outdoor Activities

Site visits, guided tours, and exhibition work.

Mission

The association is dedicated to researching, documenting, and bringing to life the rich Jewish history of Lackenbach — one of the most significant and largest communities of the Sheva Kehillot (Seven Communities) of Burgenland.

We preserve memories, rescue and transcribe historical sources, care for the sites of Jewish life, and create — through the Jewish Information Center Lackenbach — a place for learning, encounter, respectful dialogue, remembrance, and commemoration.

Our work connects historical responsibility with a forward-looking perspective:

for an Austria that is aware of its Jewish past — and learns from it for the present.
